Who, me?

“Who, me?” 9″ x 12″, Graphite and Colored Pencil on Watercolor Paper

This drawing was a wonderful opportunity to play with texture. The variations in the cat’s fur and the rough red yarn were a joy to draw. Due to the amount of movement in the subject itself, I opted to keep the background fairly simple. Subtle shading and shadows under the yarn and behind the cat make them look grounded, but do not distract from the elegant curve of the feline’s spine or the fun tangle of the red yarn.

In regards to color, the greatest challenge was having a delicate touch and not overworking the surface. The grey fur is a mixture of warm tans and cool blues – giving it a sense of depth and movement. I used the white of the paper for the highlights. The yarn is a mixture of the same blues that were used in the fur and many different shades of red. By using the same blues throughout the drawing, there is a sense of unity to the composition.
