Kayla and Ryan

“Kayla and Ryan,” 9″ x 12″, Graphite Pencil on Watercolor Paper

Kayla and Ryan are a conglomeration of several photos and numerous textures. The smooth tresses of Kayla are a pleasant opposite to the spikier blond hair on Ryan. The freckled noses add a different consistency from their smooth brows. And, of course, both have beautiful twinkling eyes, full of laughter. With so much detail in their features, I opted to keep their clothing and the background very simple, so there is nothing to detract from the two siblings.

To create a sense of unity in the drawing, I played with the location of their heads and Kayla’s hair. The two ears in the center are slightly touching and some of Kayla’s locks are swaying over to her brother. This creates a negative space shaped as a loose triangle (one of the most stable and pleasing silhouettes in art). To add to this sense of togetherness, I conjoined their torsos where they touch by fading away the shadows. Like a delicate balancing act, you need both to create this balanced composition.
