OK – this is not my typical portrait style. It was a special request. A wife wanted a portrait of her husband, Rob, who is a huge fan of the zombie show “Walking Dead.” She wanted a combination of a fine portrait – drawn realistically so that her husband would be recognizable – and a zombie picture.

She requested a black and white portrait with traces of blood in red. After fleshing out the details (no pun intended), I realized that the blood was too striking, so added slight traces of color throughout the drawing. There are subtle traces of blue, green, and sienna around his eyes and wherever there is bruising. I looked online to find images of zombies to reference. Some of the most common features include dark shading around the eye, a torn cheek and a rotten lip with teeth bared. Rob is a member of the Beardsmen society of Rochester – so when choosing which bits to mutilate, I decided to leave his facial hair intact.
